Explanation of the Problem to be Addressed

Research Aim

This research arises out of work to create systems to facilitate management of design and cost related knowledge within those organisations, with the aim of using this knowledge to reduce the costs of manufacturing products. This thesis identifies ways that problems arising from the model development process can be addressed by a new way of providing for the creation of software. With experience from projects, which have used a combination of proprietary software solutions and bespoke software, it is possible to identify the approach of User Driven Programming (UDP). This research unites approaches of Object Orientation, the Semantic Web, and Relational Databases and event driven programming. The approach encourages much greater user involvement in software development.

Software development is time consuming and error prone because of the need to learn computer languages. If people could instruct a computer without this requirement they could concentrate all their effort on the problem to be solved. This is termed User Driven Programming (UDP) within this research, and for the examples demonstrated the term User Driven modelling (UDM) is used to explain the application of user driven programming to model development. This research aims to create software that enables people to program using visual metaphors. Users enter information in a diagram, which for these examples is tree based. The program translates this human readable representation into computer languages.

This research demonstrates how a taxonomy can be used to automatically produce software. This technique is most suitable at present to modelling, visualisation, and searching for information. The research explains the technique of User Driven Model Development that could be part of a wider approach of User Driven Programming. This approach involves the creation of a visual environment for software development, where modelling programs can be created without the requirement of the model developer to learn programming languages. The theory behind this approach is explained and also the main practical work in creation of this system. The basis of this approach is modelling of the software to be produced in Ontology systems such as Jena and Protg.

The research applies this technique to aerospace engineering but it should be applicable to any subject.

Why a different approach is needed

User involvement is important in the development of software but a domain expert does not necessarily possess expertise in software development, and a software developer cannot have expertise in every domain to which software might apply. So it is important to make it possible for software to be created using methods as close as possible to that which the domain expert normally uses. The proportion of domain experts in a particular domain (aerospace engineering) for example who can develop their own programs is fairly low, but the proportion that are computer literate in the every day use of computers is much higher. If this computer literacy is harnessed to allow the domain experts to develop and share models, the productivity for software development will be increased and the proportion of misunderstandings between domain experts and developers reduced. The domain experts can then explore a problem they are trying to solve and produce code to solve it. The role of the developer would then become more that of a mentor and enabler rather than someone who has to translate all the ideas of the expert into code themselves.

User Driven Model Development

The intention of the research into User Driven Modelling (UDM) and more widely User Driven Programming (UDP) is to enable non-programmers to create software from a user interface that allows them to model a particular problem or scenario. This involves a user entering information visually in the from of a tree diagram. The research involves developing ways of automatically translating this information into program code in a variety of computer languages. This is very important and useful for many employees that have insufficient time to learn programming languages. To achieve this visual editors are used to create and edit taxonomies to be translated into code. To make this possible it is also important to examine visualisation, and visualisation techniques to create a human computer interface that allows non experts to create software.

The research mainly concentrates on using the above technique for modelling, searching and sorting. The technique should be usable for other types of program development. Research relevant to User Driven Programming in general is covered as this could be applied to the problem in future.

This research unites approaches of object orientation, the semantic web, relational databases, and event driven programming. These communities could include both software experts, and domain experts who are much more able to attain the expertise to develop their own models than they are using current software languages. Criteria necessary for User Driven Model Development

This section explains the factors necessary to make the User Driven Model Development approach later outlined possible.

Firstly it is necessary to find a way for people with little programming expertise to use an alternative form of software creation that can later be translated into program code. The main approach taken was the use of visual metaphors to enable this creation process, although others may investigate a natural language approach. A translation method can then be provided that converts this representation into program code in a number of languages or into a Meta-language that can then be further translated. In order to achieve this it is necessary for the translator to understand and interpret equations that relate objects in the visual definition and obtain the results. In order for the user to understand the translation that has been performed it is then important to visualise the translated code and this must be accessible to others who use the translated implementation. Web pages are a useful mechanism for this as they are widely accessible.

This program has really delighted my 12 year old, and I have also used it, and I've enjoyed it too! It is so easy to use, and just engages you in writing so quickly. I think the parts that my daughter likes most are the diary (which she locks with a password) developing characters with the wizard and the fact that she can quickly write a short story and print it out with its own cover. I think it is a neat program, and I particularly like the way it keeps her occupied, in something that is quite constructive.

Sometime back, a friend of mine had a problem when he tried to update a graphics package on his laptop. He actually wanted to edit the video clippings on his cam coder and for this he tried to download those video clippings to his laptop. The system detected the cam coder but when he tried to download the videos and pictures from the cam coder, the graphics package brought out a window error and requested for a restart process. He contacted me for help to resolve the problem.

As an experienced user of Windows, I could use Regedit32 to fix the problem and to my surprise I discovered that there were multiple installations of a single driver. Virtumonde is a pernicious Adware Trojan that is usually installed into your windows pc (Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista) via an outdated Java Runtime Environment. Vundo, also known as Virtumonde and Virtumondo creates random letter DLL's in C:windowssystem32 (tyeyavv.dll for example) that inject themselves into the winlogon.exe process as well as the explorer.exe process. Since Vundo injects itself into winlogon.exe removal can be very hard because winlogon.exe is in use almost every second. -MalwareBytes AntiMalware (malwarebytes.org)
-SuperAntiSpware (superantispyware.com)
-VundoFix (from atribune.org)
-UnDLL (from eset.com)

To start the Vundo removal process:
1. Backup any personal data to CD, DVD or flash drive.
2. Download and install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
3. Load MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and click the update tab and then click update to receive the latest updates.
4. Download and install SuperAntiSpyware.
5. Load SuperAntiSpyware. SuperAntiSpyware will ask you if you want to check for new rules and definitions. Choose yes.
6. Close SuperAntiSpyware.
7. Download VundoFix.
8. Download UnDLL.
9. Reboot your PC in Safe Mode.
10. While in safe mode load MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and perform a full scan.
11. When the scan is complete click show results.
12. Remove any checked items.
13. Reboot if MalwareBytes asks you to.
14. Enter Safemode again.
15. Load SuperAntiSpyware.
16. Click Preferences and click the scanning control tab.
17. Check on "Terminate memory threats before quarantining".
18. Close preferences and click the "Scan your computer " button.
19. Select "Perform Complete scan" and click next
20. Let the scan complete and remove anything it finds.
21. Next, we'll finish up the Vundo detection and removal process by using VundoFix
22. Open VundoFix and click the "Scan for Vundo" button.
23. If any Vundo infections still remain click the "Fix Vundo" button.
24. At this point Vundo has most likely been neutralized.
25. Reboot your pc.
26. You should be Vundo Free now.
27. Download and install the latest copy of the Java Runtime Environment and keep it updated.
28. Do yourself a favor and buy Spyware Doctor with Antivirus (one license protects 3 PC's). It's the only antivirus that I've tested this year to successfully detect and remove almost every variant of Vundo with very little effort.

If you think any Vundo Trojans have been missed in c:windows or c:windowssystem32 then you scan submit those files to virustotal.com for analysis. If the file you submit comes back as a possible infection then you may forcibly remove it using UnDLL. This Seminar style DVD is fantastic for anyone interested in learning Sony Acid Pro version 6. It also covers the features of what made Acid famous in previous versions of the software; the loop based functions. This package comes with 4 discs. The first disc is nothing but a demo disc with all of Sony's popular audio/video programs. These are only free trials or demo versions, and having the full versions of most the software that was on the disc, I didn't check it out much. Discs 2 and 3 are DVD video discs that can be played in any home DVD player, or on your pc. They recommend watching it on your home DVD player, as the 4th disc is called the "companion disc". This disc is a CD-ROM data disc that contains all the files featured in the 2 DVD video presentations, so you can copy them to your computer's hard drive and follow along with the instructor on DVDs and learn how to use Acid fluently. Now, I myself have used Acid a lot before, and was just hoping what I was doing was the right way to use the features I was going for. I have watched the DVDs, and so far learned many things I didn't know acid was capable of, but also learned that there are faster/easier ways to do the things I have been going for. This package, like I stated above, covers every aspect of the program and how to use it. Sony not only made the Acid Pro 6 software, but this very DVD package came from Sony's studios and was created by the people who designed the program. So you're getting the best training with this package. However, I would not recommend this product for novice PC users who don't have much experience with audio. I worked with Acid without this DVD package for months and got somewhat use to it, along with reading PC recording books, asking questions on forums, ect. So again, I would only recommend this DVD package for users who know a little (or a lot) about pro audio and PCs because this package only covers Acid as a program, and not all the PC bells and whistles needed to run it. If you have never used Acid before, I would recommend opening the program up and play around with it a little before using this training DVD. The instructor moves along pretty fast through all the training "classes" and you will find yourself pausing and playing back sections very frequently if you don't know much about Acid. They go through the sections pretty fast, but if you know Acid somewhat, you can follow along with them pretty easy. The best thing to do, is watch the DVDs through once, and then try the tricks in Acid. And if there is a few things you can't remember how to do, just bust out the training DVDs again and review them. I was so impressed with this package, then I went ahead and bought the other seminar DVDs for the other programs I have from Sony. These are fantastic. Overall, this was defiantly worth my money and has shown me way more then I expected. Don't let the jargen fool you... you DON'T need pro tools... I could not be more happy with this product. The Game of the Year edition includes not only the original game, but the two complete expansion packs that really add so much. Where many expansion packs merely add new areas to explore, these add so much more - including the ability to turn into a vampire and conduct vampire-specific quests! Bethesda has broken so much ground with this gorgeous game and has managed to make, in essence, a single-player MMORPG. The graphics are beautiful and draw you into the game seamlessly, the quests and fun and challenging, and the plot is griping. In addition to all this, there is a wonderful treasure trove of player-created content online that builds off the Morrowind foundation and provides new levels of depth and wonder. Even today this "dated" game is one of my favorites and I still sink dozens of hours into it on my weekends.

In brief; the game is wonderful and in itself should get a 5/5 stars, but this purchase does not get it. I don't know if others have similar problems to mine, but I can't get the bloodmoon disc to work no matter how much I try. It will install, but as far as running the game won't even start up unless you disable the bloodmoon expansion. There is most likely a way to fix this, I just haven't been able to find it. And it is still a good bargain! The price is hard to beat for both the original and tribunal. And there is always a problem with learning how things are done. If you have never played before be prepared for being annoyed with learning how to do a lot of the little things in the game, but know that it is more than worth it.

Customer Review: Indispensable for my tape-to-MP3 project
I found Spin it Again by a web search several months ago and it's now indispensable software for me. At the time I was looking for a way to convert an oral history interview from cassette tape to CD, and Spin it Again was the perfect solution for that. After that, I started a new project with Spin it Again: converting my collection of audiobooks from cassette tape to digital audio. Spin it Again is user-friendly. I appreciate that because I'm not interested in advanced digital audio editing; I just want to produce decent-sounding audio files from my books on tape. I'm sure I'm only using a fraction of the software's capabilities, but that fraction is all I need. The tape noise removal options have all worked well. The "level wizard" is great for setting recording levels each time I start with a set of tapes. This software is so indispensable to me by now that when I ditched my desktop PC for an iMac this spring, I moved Spin it Again (wish they did have a Mac version) to my notebook PC so that I can continue to use it. I've tried a few highly-rated recording applications on the Mac (including Audacity). I'm sure they are fine, but they had learning curves I just don't have the time for. I really like Spin it Again much better for my purposes. The only problem I encountered using Spin it Again on my notebook PC was the notebook's lack of a line-in jack (it only has a microphone jack - and Acoustica warns against using that as a line-in from audio equipment as the sound load can damage the mic jack). I tried using the mic input for a couple of tape conversions but the sound was distorted. I have just purchased and starting using the Behringer U-Control which connects my tape player via USB instead of the microphone input, and am pleased with the results. If you want to convert your old cassette tapes or LPs to digital audio without having to master complicated software, Spin it Again is a good choice.

You know how panicky you can get when your computer crashes. Before mine crashed a message flashed across the screen stating Illegal Operation Error. Now what do I make of that? I moved my computer to the room with the air condition in it, hoping that that would cool things off. But yes, like you would have guessed, it crashed again. I called my friend who is good at these things. He observed that I might have a problem with the Registry on my computer and that it would be good for me to check the internet for information. He asked me to check out a software program called Regcure.

I did a little research on the Internet and found out that when the registry files get corrupt they slow down the system, throw up errors and can also crash the computer completely. The cure was to put these registry files in place. I understood from the articles on the internet that this is done using a Registry Repair Software, like Regcure. The pessimistic in me got the better of me, for I checked for negative reviews on Regcure first. Most articles spoke favorably about Regcure. However, in some areas, like in Registry backup, Regcure offered only one method while another software, Max Registry Cleaner offered three; Live Help offered advanced support features and scan log analysis, while Regcure did not. Some features on Regcure though were unique to it. I decided to give it a try. Regcure offers a free trial using which I ran a scan on my computer. There were a whole lot of errors, about 700 plus.

The reviews on the internet were good, so I purchased the software and installed it on my system. It just took me about 5 minutes to figure out how it works. Regcure first scanned the system for errors. It next used the Regcure Automatic Repair feature. It fixed all those errors that were identified. Another thing, every time Regcure runs, a backup of the registry is created on the computer. This ensures that if you ever inadvertently remove some item from the registry, you can always restore it from the backup. Then there's something called the Startup Management feature. I tried that too. I did not know that having many startup items on the computer can impede its performance - and I had quite a few of them. With the help of the Startup Management feature on Regcure, I disabled quite a lot of the startup programs. Now my computer boots up like it is newly out of the box. Regcure is compatible across any Windows Operating System. It comes with standard Registry Repair Software features like registry optimization, options for scheduled scanning, backup and restore and Custom scanning options. I must say here that Regcure has performed quite well, and has lived up to what it promises. It is easy to learn how to use it, and easy to use it too.

I also wondered why my anti-virus software did not do any of these Registry Repairs. I did a little more research on the internet and found out that many of these problems are caused by spyware and AdWare. You can't actually treat spyware and AdWare as harmful, although they do nibble away at your computer's resources. They are also a cause of concern when it comes to maintaining privacy. It is because of this not-so-subtle, but still obscure difference that anti-virus companies have not really gone after spyware and AdWare. This is the reason why a spyware removal tool is necessary even though you have installed anti-virus software on your computer.
